Winners for Lewes AC across all age groups and events
With many Lewes AC members in action across the extended weekend there were some significant successes for the club and for club members. On Sunday the under 17 and under 20 athletes were competing at Lewes in the last match of the Southern Youth Development League.
The Lewes athletes competing as Team Sussex with athletes from the East Grinstead and Hayward Heath clubs came out top in the match beating teams from Ashford, Medway, Bexley, Dartford and Horsham. With over 460 points in the match to confirm the win this consolidated the team’s second position in the league a great performance over the whole season.
Whilst it was a great team effort there were some magnificent individual performances helping the team to first position. The photographs in the gallery shows James Martin tackling the water jump and going on the win the 2000m steeple chase. The other photograph shows Evan Carter competing in the 400m hurdles race. Livvy Connor was again at her best winning the pole vault and breaking her own club record in the 100m hurdles. Special mention must be made of Millie Hemsley who smashed her own pole vault personal best to achieve a national standard for English Schools.
At the other end of the age spectrum the club’s veteran athletes were in action on Monday and also won their match. Up against clubs from Brighton, Hailsham, Eastbourne, Arena 80 and Worthing the Lewes men and women’s teams both came out on top. Again whilst this was a great team effort there were some tremendous individual age group performances that stood out.
Ciaran Hardy competing as an over 40 won the long jump, 100m and 400m races was second in the high jump and was part of the club’s winning medley relay team. Equalling Ciaran was Mark Rahman who also came first in the men’s over 50 age group100m, 400m, long jump and was second in the high jump and a key member of the medley relay team. Also scoring great points for the team were Andrew Masters with a gallant second place in the over 40 men’s 5000m race with 17mins.06.seconds and Paul Cousins winning the men’s over 50 5,000m in 17mins 16secs.
Special mention must be made of Helen Sida and Rachel Hornigold who competed for the first time on the track and had great performances in the 1500m and 400m races. Also having a great match and scoring many points for the team was Pauline Keep who came first in the women’s over 50 hammer and javelin competitions.
Also in action over the weekend were 21 club members running in the Seven Stiles race which is part of the West Sussex Fun Run League. Lara Barazzuol came in first women and 26th overall in race with over 360 runners. First of the Lewes men was Ben Hoffmann finishing in 13th position overall.
