It is the philosophy and practice of Lewes Athletic Club that up until the age of around 14 years old junior members should be presented with the opportunity to be coached in all running, jumping and throwing events. Not only is this good practice but is recommended by England Athletics the sport’s governing body. Over the years we have found that many young athletes eventually excel in an event that wasn’t their first choice.
It is only when the junior member reaches the age of around 14 or 15 should their coaching become more event specific. However within this overall approach the club will of course continue to help junior athletes who have a particular talent or interest in a particular event.
There are many opportunities for Academy members to compete. The younger members are have an opportunity during the winter to compete in the Sussex Indoor Athletics League. Also during the winter months and early spring there are the opportunities to compete in Cross Country Leagues. Races are held for under 11 Academy members as well as cross country races for those aged under 13 and under 15.
During the summer athletics season there are further opportunities to compete in a number of Track and Field events and Leagues. These include the Sussex based under 13 and under 15 leagues as well as the Nationally and Regionally organised Youth Development League. This league enables young athletes aged under 13 and under 15 to compete against others of their age from clubs across the South East.
The sports hall competing opportunities as well as the Sussex based under 13 and under 15 leagues enables young athletes from the Academy to have their first taste of competition in a friendly and locally based league against other Sussex based clubs.
The club believes that competing is important as it helps young Academy members to develop their life skills by being part of a team and respecting others. It also enables them to think for themselves in preparing for the competition.
