Livvy Connor strikes gold again at the England Athletics Championships
At the all England Athletics under15 and under17 Championships held at Bedford over the weekend there were some great performances by Lewes AC young athletes. Leading the way on Sunday was Livvy Connor who won the gold medal in the under 17 women’s pole vault competition with a vault of 3.60m. This win equals her own club record and adds the National outdoor title to the indoor title she has already secured.
Also battling the winds on Sunday with Livvy in the pole vault competition was Millie Hemsley who whilst still in the first year of the U17 age group finished a very credible 12th position.
Also competing on the very windy Sunday Ruby Whyte-Wilding had a fantastic result in the under 17 women’s 1500m steeple chase. Not only did Ruby smash her life time best but her time of 5mins 26.25 seconds smashed the club record and was below the English schools under19 women’s qualifying standard.
On Saturday there were also some great results by the Lewes AC athletes. Ben Martin who is still in the first year of the under 15 boy’s age group took 7 seconds off his personal best for the 3000m race. His time of 9mins 39.57secs also broke the club record and helped him to finish in a splendid 11th place in this national competition.
On the Saturday with the wind howling around the pole vault bed Jack Harris & Bill Saunders who are both in the first year of the under 15 boy’s age group came 11th & 12th in the national competition. Jack for the second time snapped his pole and is now getting known in the club as ‘snapper’ Harris.
With the wind getting even stronger later in the competition all the competitors in the under15 girl’s pole vault struggled with their poles being blown back onto the bar. The wind together with the fact that “snapper” had broken the pole the girls used meant that Lucy Thompson and Freya Fitchett struggled in the competition but nevertheless gained very credible 19th and 14th places respectively.
