Lewes AC young athletes off to a fine start to the track season.
The Lewes AC team of under 13 and under 15 athletes made an early start to travel to Maidstone to compete in the first match of the UKA Youth Development League. With seven teams competing against each other the Lewes team with 452 points came away with a very creditable second place behind the strong home team of Medway and Maidstone with 684 points.
In third place was the Hastings AC team with 414 points followed by Worthing and District with 383 points, East Grinstead AC with 341points, Holland Sports 266 points and Medway Park Phoenix with 121 points.
Many of the club’s young athletes were competing for the first time and turned in some very creditable performances to help the team deliver a strong result. Not only did Lewes athletes win many of their events but did so by recording 10 personal best performances.
There was a star performance by Anouska Fairhurst in the under 13 girl’s javelin where her throw of 28.56m was not only a club record but a personal best and ranks her number one in the UK. Also recording personal bests and wins in the javelin were Ben Goode in the U15 event with 24.15m and Zac Ferm in the same age group with a throw of 23.92m. Hector Summers also won the under 13 boys javelin with a throw of 16.96m
There were also some outstanding winning performances in the jump events with Ned McCauley recording a personal best jump of 2.00m in the U15 boy’s pole vault. Also competing in the pole vault were Frances Osman-Allu who jumped 2.30m in the U15 girls event and Ivy Spencer who jumped a personal best in the same age group with 1.90m.
Also in winning and personal best form were Gemma Turton in the U13 girls 150m with a time of 22.51secs and Chloe Kornevall who won the U15 girls 800m with a time of 2mins 42secs. Both Gemma and Chloe contributed further great points to the Lewes AC team score by gaining second places in other events.
Gemma jumped a personal best to come second in the high jump with a jump of 1.20m and second in the long jump again with a personal best leap of 3.64m. Chloe also had a great run in the 300m sprint to come second again with a personal best time of 46.65secs. Will Carey in the boys U15 1500m just missed first place by two seconds with a personal best time of 4mins 41.74secs.
