Rob Mullett on Course to be first Lewes AC athlete to compete at the Olympic Games
Rob Mullett a Lewes AC athlete since he was a young athlete aged 11 is on course to compete in the Rio Olympics this year. Aiming to make the British team to compete in the 3000m Steeple Chase Rob is required to run twice under the Olympic qualifying time of 8mins 30seconds.
On the first of May when running in the USA he just missed breaking this barrier by just 0.63 of a second when he was impeded by another runner at the water jump.
Boosted by just missing the qualifying time in this race Rob was encouraged to run a second race in the USA and this time smashed the Olympic qualifying time by 8 seconds. His time of 8mins 22.42 seconds means he is well on his way to getting the qualification to run at the Olympic Games.
Running in his Lewes vest Rob ran a controlled race to ensure he got the time he required. He spent most of the 3K race in around 10th place but over the last 800m pushed on hard and smashed the 8min 30sec barrier with a massive personal best of 8mins 22.42secs. This is not only an Olympic qualifying time but is also the fastest time by a British athlete for 22 YEARS, and is 9th on the all time British list.
With one qualifying time in the bag Rob is now aiming to get the 2nd qualifying time at the Diamond League event in Birmingham on June 5th. There is also another time to crack the 8mins 30sec time and book his place in the British Olympic team when competing in the National Championships also to be held in Birmingham on June 25th.
In 2012 Rob just missed out in a place at the London Olympics by 0.25 of a second, so hopefully this year will be a special year to enable Rob Mullett to be the first Lewes AC athlete to make it to the greatest stage in sport.
