Lewes AC – Sunday Cross Country League Champions
On Sunday by winning the last of five cross country events in the East Sussex Cross County League Lewes AC secured their position as League Champions. Up against 12 other clubs in the league and with a team of twenty club members across all adult age groups the Lewes Team won the league by two points from Hailsham Harriers In third position was the combined team of Eastbourne AC and Seaford Striders followed in fourth position by the Heathfield and Uckfield combined team.
There was not only a tremendous team effort at the last race at Bllackstock Farm but there were some great individual performances by club members. Robbie James won the tough, hilly and very muddy race from Gary Judges of Hailsham. Robbie was backed up by Chris Gilbert in 3rd position, Lewis Sida in 5th, Jonathon Burrell 8th Ben Messer 9th and Andrew Masters 13th This close packing at the front of the race secured massive points for the Lewes team.
Equally impressive were the club’s women runners scoring great team and individual points. Sally Norris lead the charge by scoring as the 2nd senior women followed by Emma Robertson as 3rd senior women and Sarah Healey in 4th. Helen Sida had a great run finishing in 3rd position in the women’s over 45 age category with Carole Walters following up in 6th position in this category.
Not only was this the last race of the series that decided the league champions but it was also the deciding event for individual medals across the whole five events. Here again the club had great results with the gold medal positions in the men’s age groups going to Ben Messer in the Senior Men’s category and Jonathon Burrell in the men’s over 50 category. The women’s gold medal positions were Helen Sida in the women’s over 45 age category and Bev Sheridan in the women’s over 55 age group.
There were also three bronze medal prizes won by club members with Andrew Masters winning the bronze in the men over 40 age category, Alf Pollard in the men over 60 and Sally Norris in the senior women category.
These results bode well for next week end at Bexhill in the last of the Sussex County Cross Country League events organised by the Sussex Athletics Association. As the results stand at the moment the club has 13 members across all age groups with potential medal winning chances. There is a similar situation with age group team prizes with six Lewes AC teams in potential medal winning positions.
