Lewes AC at the South of England Cross Country Championships
It was with some trepidation that a coach load of Lewes AC athletes left Lewes on Saturday 25th January to do battle at the South of England Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields in London. Up against the might of clubs from across the whole of the South East Region there were nevertheless some sterling performances by Lewes AC runners. It was the first time since the club’s formation that Lewes AC had runners in every race.
In the 9 mile muddy and hilly senior men’s race the team of six included only one senior man the rest being well into the veteran category. Nevertheless there was a great performance by the team with a finish in the top half of finishing teams. Helping the team finish to in 48th position out of 110 teams and in a race with nearly 1,000 runners were Matt Bradford in 250th position, Chris Gilbert (252nd) Andrew Masters (335th) Jonathon Burrell (380th) Lee Woodgate (466th) and Chris Hunt (546th)
In the senior women’s race Lizzie Keep and Catlin Lloyd both had excellent runs to finish well up the field of 466 runners. Lizzie with a run just outside the top 100 in 107th position had a great run followed by Catlin in 152nd place.
At the bottom end of the age range Ben Martin probably had the best run for Lewes AC with a fine run to finish in 13th place out of a race with 285 competitors. Supporting Ben were Ben Walters (160th) Jay Atkins (174th) Jo Webban (181) and Alex Monson (264th) The Lewes AC under 13 team finished 26th out of 45 teams.
In the under 13 girls race there was no team result for Lewes but Rosie Gainsford finished well up in the race of 292 competitors with a 117th position finish. Ella Fleming finished in 203rd position and Anya Tamplin in 140th. There were two under 15 boys competing for Lewes with Jasper Baker finishing 131st and Sam Rogers finishing 145th in a race of 258 competitors.
There were also single competitors for Lewes in the under 20 men’s race, the under 20 women’s race and the under 17 women’s race. Ben Pepler finished in 93rd position in the men’s race of 105 competitors with Faith Daughtery finished 70th in the under 20 women’s race of 78 competitors and Evie Rothwell 108th in the under 17 women’s race of 151 competitors.
The under15 girls race saw Nia Hall have yet another excellent run finishing well up in the race of 285 runners in 94th position. Ella Munday finished in 149th position and Roxy Fawcett in 233rd position.
The Lewes under 17 men’s team again turned out in force with seven runners in the race of 209 runners. First for Lewes was Patrick McManus in 91st position behind Patrick was Toby Baker (124th) Harry Strong (138th) James Martin (167th) Sam Jackson (170th) Connor Sullivan (176) and Tom Stone (186)
