Highs and Lows for Lewes AC athletes over May Bank Holiday Weekend
There were mixed fortunes for Lewes AC runners as they spread themselves far and wide over the May Bank Holiday weekend. There was success for the Lewes runners at Haywards Heath and Barcombe but disappointment for the junior members at Portsmouth.
It was a small team of veteran runners that represented Lewes at the Haywards Heath 10 mile race which is the latest in the Sussex Road Racing Grand Prix series. Despite a strong showing from other clubs all with senior runners the Lewes veterans came away with the second team prize only beaten by the home team Haywards Heath Harriers. The team’s second position in the race shows the strength in depth of the Lewes AC veteran runners who with this result must now be leading the veterans’ category in the Sussex Road Racing Grand Prix
Leading home the team at Haywards Heath was Chris Gilbert who despite a painful calf muscle at around the 8 mile mark scored a remarkable 8th place in a time of 62mins 35secs and the first over 40 runner. Packing well the rest of the team were Andrew Masters in 13th position (63.57) Jonathan Burrell 20th (64.55) Mark Cage 27th (66.04) and Colin Bennett 45th (70.07)
The final member representing Lewes, and possibly the youngest runner in the race, was Chris’s daughter Meredith. She battled her way round the hilly course and with a strong finish came in first junior women in a time of 1:49:42
There was a great turn out of Lewes AC club members at the local Barcombe fun runs held in support of Project Zambia. In the shorter 6K race both the male and female winners came from the Lewes club as did the male and female runners in the longer 10K race. First across the line in the 10K race was Josh Burgess and first women was Lara Barazzuol
It was the turn of the club’s under 13 and under 15 athletes to travel to Portsmouth on Saturday 3rd May to take on seven other clubs in the Young Athletes track and field league. After gaining promotion last season Lewes AC were looking for a good start in division two. Sadly Lewes could only muster enough athletes to cover less than half the events in the program, this together with very strong opposition pushed Lewes into 7th position out of 8.
Despite a depleted team there were however some very good performances. Top Lewes girl of the day must be Grace Salter U15G who managed lifetime bests in all three of her events Jumping 4.34m in the Long Jump for 3rd place followed by 13.1 seconds for 3rd in the 75m hurdles and 13.1 seconds for 2nd place in the 100m which also equalled the club record.
For the boys James Linington U15B also produced three lifetime bests, 24.66m in the Discus, 1.55m in the High Jump and 11.8 seconds to win the 100m just a tenth outside the club record.
