Great results for Lewes AC runners in the Sussex County Cross Country League
Being promoted last year into division one of the Sussex County Cross Country League it was a leap into the dark to see how Lewes AC performed against the bigger clubs in the County. These fears were groundless, with one event still to go the club already has one league champion and the veteran runners are leading their division by a wide margin. There are also other great individual and team performances with all to play for at the last league event at Bexhill in the New Year.
Competing in the boy’s under 13 age group in the first three events Ben Martin completed a hat trick of wins and now cannot be beaten to win the individual gold medal. Throughout all three races he battled against Tom Thaye a Crawley AC runner and at the third race at Lancing it was again neck and neck between them until the downhill stretch from the top of the Lancing hill. It was here that Ben put in his effort and won by a convincing margin. Ben was well supported in the team event by Jay Atkins, Joseph Webbon, Alex Monson and Giles Baker finishing in second place in the race and in the bronze medal position leading into the last race at Bexhill.
At the other end of the age spectrum it is the Club’s over 40 runners that are leading the way in the individual and team events. After three events the Lewes AC ‘vets’ A team are in first position by a wide points margin over the other Sussex teams. With 51 points the Lewes team lead Crawley A who have 108 points, Brighton Phoenix 110 points and Brighton and Hove A 116 points. Indicating the strength in depth of the Lewes vets the Lewes B team is just behind in fifth position. In the Lancing race the vet’s A team of Robbie James, Chris Gilbert and Andrew Masters scored 17 points beating the Brighton A team by a convincing by 9 points to maintain the team’s position as league leaders.
Whilst the veteran’s team are leading their division the senior men’s A team are lying second in division one behind Brighton and Hove and in front of Brighton Phoenix. A fantastic performance after three league events creates a great spring board for a great result at the last event at Bexhill. With strength down the field the men’s B team are 3rd in division 2 with the men’s C team 4th in division 3. The women’s A team are still 5th in division 1 with the women’s B team are 4th in division 2. The women’s vets A team are 7th in the vets division moving up from 9th
Starting from not knowing how the club would perform having been promoted to the upper divisions of the Sussex League Lewes AC currently has 7 teams in the top 5 of their divisions. This is second only to Brighton and Hove AC who have 9. So by this measure we can honestly say Lewes AC is the second best achieving club overall in this league.
