A feast of personal bests at the Sussex Schools Championships
At the Sussex Schools Track and Field Championships held at the K2 Stadium in Crawley at the weekend 26 club members competed for their respective schools and secured 17 personal bests in their events. The star performer must be Scott Staples who won the junior boys javelin with a personal best throw of 43.20m.This not only won the event but also exceeded the qualifying distance to compete at the National English Schools Championships later this year.
Another significant performance was that by Arron Guilford in the senior boys 200m which he won in a personal best time of 22.1secs. This time also broke the Lewes AC club record and qualified him for English Schools. Other club members winning their events were Livvy Connor in the intermediate girl’s pole vault with a vault of 3.30m also qualified for English Schools and James Shackleton in the senior boy’s pole vault with a personal best vault of 4.00m.
The host of club members finishing in the silver medal position included Ethan Bickmore-Vaughan in the junior boys100m with a time of 11.9secs; Izzy Osbourne in the junior girls 200m with a time of 27.01secs; Sam Rogers in the junior boys 800m with a personal best time of 2mins 09.8secs; Matt Dingle with a personal best throw of 47.63m in the intermediate boys javelin: Luke Staple again with a life time best throw in the intermediate boys hammer event with a throw of 47.23m and in the intermediate girls hammer event Millie Cable came second with a personal best throw of 27.39m: In the senior boys events Tim Caliafas came second in the 3000m with a personal best time of 09:32.0 and Remi McDonald in the same age group with a personal best vault of 3.70m came second.
Other clubs members competed with their results includes Luca Bish 5th in the junior boys high jump with 1.45m and in the junior girls category Grace Salter 5th in the 100m with a personal best of 13.02secs: Ella Mundy 9th in the 1500m with 5:35.8 (pb)
Polly Saunders 10th in the high jump with a jump of 1.25m: Larissa Carter 4th in the discus with 9.61m (pb) and Millie Hemsley also in the Discus 8th with a throw of 16.76m
In the intermediate boys events the results included Hugo Sharkey 3rd in the high jump with1.70m: Sam Jackson 7th in the same event with1.60m (pb): David Thomas 6th in the shot putt with 8.57m (pb); Connor Sullivan 7th in the 800m with 2:19.01 (pb); James Martin 11th in the 1500m with 4:51.02(pb) and Patrick McManus 4th in the 1500m steeple chase with 5.11.3.
The intermediate girls age group saw Ruby Whyte-Wilding come third in the 800m with 2:28.4 and Amy Davila in the same event 4th with a time of2:28.9. In the senior girls pole vault Hannah McDonald was 3rd with a vault of 2.80m
Finally at the open pole vault competition at the Lewes Track on Sunday Jack Harris moveed up to 5th on the UK all time list for under 13 boys in the pole vault with a vault of 2.95m. This height is also a UK age group record beating the old national record of 2.90m for the under 12 age group.
