A busy and successful time for Lewes AC athletes at the beginning of July

The last seven days or so has been a hectic and successful time for the Lewes AC members as they compete in a wide range of events.

At the Sussex under 13 championships held at Brighton the Club’s junior athletes came away with a fistful of medals. The details have been recorded in a separate item in this news section.

English Schools Championships: There were 8 Lewes AC young athletes representing Sussex at the English Schools Championships that took place at Gateshead on the 8th and 9th July. For the club to achieve this number of representatives in what is classed as the schools Olympics is a major achievement for the 8 young athletes and the club.

Livvy Connor the Sussex team captain who won the gold medal last year in the senior girls’ pole vault again retained her title by winning gold this year with a vault of 3.80m. Scott Staples with a new personal best came 5th in the senior boy’s javelin competition with a throw of 57.07m.

Jack Harris with a vault of 4.00m earned a very creditable 4th place with Bill Saunders placed 7th with a vault of 3.70m. In the intermediate girls age group pole vault competition Mimi Miles was placed 5th with a vault of 3.30m and Millie Hemsley was 9th with 3.05m.

Competing in the intermediate girls hammer competition Larissa Carter was 10th with a throw of 46.15m. Coming 12th in the tough 1500m Steeple Chase was Ruby Whyte-Wilding with a time of 5mins 24.80secs.

European Championships: Competing on the European stage was Lewes AC member Rob Mullett who was selected to be part of the British team competing at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam. Running in the 3000m steeple Chase secured a place in the final where he came an excellent 6th with a time of 8mins 33.29secs. Rob is the first British steeple chaser to reach the European final since Mark Rowland in 1994.

West Sussex Fun Run League: Mid week on the 6th July 34 club adult club members turned out for the Round Hill Romp which is the 9th race in the 17 race series of fun runs across West and East Sussex. Current Lewes AC are leading the competition from all the other 18 league members and by winning the Round Hill Romp consolidated the club’s position at the top of the table.

Southern Athletics League: On Sunday the 10th July the club was locked in battle with clubs from South London, Kent and Sussex at the Lewes track. With many great individual and team performances the club won the day with a score of 264.5 points. Hercules Wimbledon AC was second with 228.5 points, East Grinstead third with 176 points and Swale United 4th with 86 points. At this event Scott Staples threw another personal best of 58.79m which will now place him 11th on the UK under 20 age rankings.
