Star performances by Lewes AC endurance athletes

Lewes AC runners played an important role in the successful Sussex Teams competing in very muddy conditions at the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Catton Hall, Swadlingcote in Derbyshire. First to mention in a staring role must be Maddie Smith who by finishing fourth in the Sussex scoring team of six helped the Sussex senior girls team to a major triumph by finishing in gold medal position. With over 300 of the best runners from each of the 45 English Counties competing in the event a Sussex win was a tremendous effort by Maddie and the team.

The intermediate boys also won their age group against all other Counties winning their team event with 129 points to second placed Kent on 196 points. In the senior boys event Tim Calliafas was the 6th finisher for the Sussex team helping the team to 11th position overall.

In the junior boys event Aiden Briffett and Sam Rogers from Lewes helped their County team to gain sixth position which again is a tremendous effort. Not only did the team come sixth but they also won the trophy for the first County team to get all eight team members home.

Since these championships were started more than fifty years ago Sussex has only twice won team medals so two team wins plus three trophy wins (including the junior boy’s trophy) on one day is a magnificent effort equalling in one day what had only been achieved previously over 50 years.
