Massive turnout for the Lewes Festival of Running and Fun Run on Easter Monday
Organised by the Lewes Athletic Club there was a fantastic turnout for all the races put on by the club at the Lewes Athletic track. There were over 1,000 runners in the four events and with friends and spectators coming to enjoy the day the crowd swelled to nearly 2,000 people.
Blessed by good weather on Easter Monday the races started with the toddlers trot. Nearly 100 of the very young, some running with (or being carried) by their parents got their first taste of competition by completing the two laps of the 400m running track..
Next up was the one mile race for the more experienced runners where 147 people of all ages completed the course around the track, school grounds and Ham Lane. Tom Ridley a young runner from Worthing Harriers was first home in a time of 5.56 minutes.
Going up the distance scale the next race was the two mile event where 80 runners completed the course down to the Southdown Club and back. Lewes AC runners filled eight of the first nine places reflecting the depth of talent in the Lewes Club which is currently celebrating the 30th year of its foundation.
Ben Martin was first home in 10.45mins closely followed by Sam Jackson in second place in 11.03mins with Jasper Baker third in 11.11mins. Nia Hall was the first girl to finish in a time of 12.38mins a few metres ahead of Hannah Jackson who finished in 12.42mins.
The big race of the morning was the 10K race which left Lewes under the by-pass, crossed the Brooks south of Lewes to Iford Village and back. First home in the race with 675 runners was James Baker from Chichester Runners in a time of 34.05mins. In second place was Simon Heath in 34.26mins. Patrick Hough was the first Lewes AC runner in third place in 35.06.
With 50 Lewes AC runners in this race there were some tremendous performances as evidenced by having seven Lewes AC runners in the top twelve places. The other top Lewes AC finishers were Joss Burgess in 4th position in a time of 36.10mins; David Bradford 5th in 36.21mins and Chris Gilbert in 6th position who was also the first over 40 runner. Patrick McManus was 7th in 38.00mins. The first over 50 runner was Jonathon Burrell in 11th position in 39.09mins with Andrew Masters in 12th three seconds behind Jonathon in 39.12mins and the second over 40 runner.
Lara Barazzuol was the first Lewes AC woman runner in 74th position and 4th woman in the race with a time of 43.30mins
