Lewes Athletic Club Race Walkers Excel at Surrey Walking Club Open Track Walks
Race Walkers from Lewes Athletic Club delivered outstanding performances despite exceptionally unpleasant weather at the Surrey Walking Club Open Track Walks, which incorporated both the Southern Area Championships and the SWC Christmas Cup. The event took place at the Tonbridge School Centre on Saturday 29th November, where athletes battled a severe midday deluge that made for some of the toughest racing conditions of the year.
In the main 5km event, British international Abigail Jennings (Aldershot AC) secured victory in an impressive 25:00.1.
Lewes AC’s young athletes shone across the age-group races:
- Under 17 Boys 3000m: Charlie Perry produced a strong, fast finish to win the Silver Medal, achieving a personal best of 16:31, just ten seconds behind the winner.
- Under 15 Boys 2000m: Seth Muddle took second place in an excellent 11:38, followed closely by teammate Stanley Taylor, who claimed fourth place in a breakthrough performance of 11:52, dipping under 12 minutes for the first time.
- Their combined efforts secured Lewes Athletic Club the team award for the event.
The trio of Lewes AC Race Walkers were especially honoured to receive their medals from double Olympian Tom Bosworth OBE, who placed sixth in the 20km race walk at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. He also competed at the postponed 2021 Tokyo Games. Despite the harsh conditions, Bosworth attended the event he had planned months in advance, offering encouragement and inspiration to all 25 race walkers who took part.
Peter Selby, Lewes AC Race Walking Coach<, praised the athletes’ resilience, saying “These young walkers showed remarkable determination in some of the worst racing conditions we’ve faced all year. To produce personal bests, podium finishes, and a team victory in that weather speaks volumes about their commitment and character. I’m incredibly proud of how they represented Lewes AC.”
