Lewes AC medals winners at the Sussex Masters Cross Country Championships

Showing that age is no barrier to winning medals Lewes AC runners came away with eight Championship medals. First away to tackle the tough hilly and frozen course at Lancing Manor were the Lewes AC women’s team in the race for women aged over 35.

There was a ding dong battle between the first two Lewes runners throughout the race with Emma Rolling just pipping Sally Norris in the run in to the finish to claim 4th and fifth positions. Both were given the same finishing time. Diana Goodfree had a great run to finish in 16th place and help the team to win the silver medal. With 25 team points the Lewes team was only two points behind the winning Arena 80 team but 9 points ahead of the chasing Hailsham Harriers team.

Moving up the age groups into the men’s race for those aged over 50 the Lewes team again were silver medal winners. With yet another storming run Jonathon Burrell again led the team into silver medal position by finishing in second position in the race. This not only helped the team win the silver medal but enabled him to be presented with the individual County silver medal. Colin Bennett and Ian Fines both had great runs to finish in 8th and 17th positions to give the team 27 points. This was some 7 points ahead of the chasing Horsham Joggers team but 9 points behind the winning team from the Brighton club.

Leading the way in the race for women aged over 55 Karin Divall finished over one minute ahead of her rivals to claim the individual gold medal.
