Lewes AC teams tackle the 100mile South Downs Relay

On Saturday 2nd June Lewes AC had three teams of six runners in the 100 mile relay race along the South Downs Way. With an A and a B men’s team plus a ladies team it was a very early start from Beachy Head to arrive at Winchester later in the day.

Team A made up of Martin Komen, Dave Bradford, Simon Thomas, Mat Homewood, Andy Masters and Colin Bennett completed the 100 mile event in 11 hours 23mins and 25secs. This time meant the team finished in fourth place in their category just missing the bronze medal position. Helping the team to get to the change over points and driving over 300 miles there and back the unsung heroes of the team were the drivers and navigators Peter Masters and Andrew Pearce.

Team B secured a better finishing position than the A team by successfully filling the bronze medal position in their race category with a total time of 12 hours 17mins and 29secs. The team of Nick Parrish, Tim Monson, Chris Hunt, Dominic Osman-Allu, Anthony Shaw and Matt Haycocks was supported by Simon Tamplin as driver and navigator.

The Lewes Ladies team of Karin Divall, Carole Waters, Carolyn Bennett, Sally Norris, Beth Gascoyne and Paula Taylor completed the relay in a time of 13hours 54mins 37secs placing the team in 5th position in their category. The ladies team however managed to secure 3rd position in the Phoenix Cup competition which is for teams that finish the nearest to their predicted finishing time. With a predicted time of 14 hours the team were within about 5 minutes of hitting their estimated overall time. The unsung heroes in supporting the ladies team by driving the mini-bus and navigating to the change over points were Andy Waters and Richard Carter.
