First time Cross Country Championship Team Medals for Lewes AC veteran runners

Lewes AC runners have continued to produce great performances and for the first time won team medals at the Sussex County Veteran Cross Country Championships. Over recent years the club has been producing great results but this is the first time in the club’s 30 year history that team medals have been won at these Championships. Making this happen were great individual and team performances by a number of Lewes AC runners.

The best of the bunch must be the gold medal performance by the men’s over 40 team. With four runners to score for the team in the tough 5 mile race at Lancing there were great individual battles with Brighton and Crawley runners. The end result saw the Lewes team gain the top spot by just 2 points from Crawley AC with Brighton and City AC a further two points behind.

Chris Gilbert had an inspired run to finish fourth overall beating many of his rivals who were in front of him in other races. Close behind Chris in 9th position was Alan Velecky with Andrew Masters just seconds behind in 10th position. Making up the critical fourth team place in 14th position was Alan Jackson whole ensured the victory for the team.

Showing that the Lewes AC over 40 runners had strength in depth the Lewes B team finished in fourth position with Chris Hunt (16th) Lee Woodgate (18th) Colin Bennett (24th) and Martin Komen (25th)

Showing that it is not only the men that can win medals the Lewes AC over 45 women’s team won the team bronze medal in the same Sussex Championships. With three to score for the team Helen Sida had a great run to finish in 6th position followed by Catherine Swinson in 8th and Karen Divall in 12th position. Other runners competing for the club team were Carole Walters; Stephanie Crispin; Andrea Ingram and Helen Bowan.

In the over 50 men’s category race there was also an inspired run by Jonathon Burrell who finished just outside wining an individual medal in fourth position.
