Lewes Athletic Club juniors win national race walking medals

Two young race walkers from Lewes Athletic Club have returned from the English Schools’ AA Combined Events and Race Walk Championships with national medals after an impressive performance at Bedford International Athletics Stadium.

Seth Muddle and Stanley Taylor represented the Sussex Schools’ Athletic Association in the Junior Boys 2000m race walk at the championships on Saturday 19 September.

Seth took silver, finishing the 2,000m in 10:39.67, while Stanley followed closely to claim bronze in 11:02.59.

The pair finished immediately behind a guest competitor from Wales, meaning Seth and Stanley took silver and bronze in the official English Schools’ championship results and secured both podium places available to English competitors.

The English Schools’ AA Combined Events and Race Walk Championships are annual national competitions organised by the English Schools’ Athletic Association (ESAA), bringing together young athletes representing their county schools’ teams from across England.

The championships divide race walking into age categories. Junior boys and girls in Years 8 and 9 compete over 2,000m, while younger athletes race over 1,500m and older age groups compete over 3,000m.

Seth and Stanley’s results are a notable achievement for Lewes Athletic Club’s junior race walking programme and highlight the growing strength of race walking within the club.

“Both Seth and Stanley should be extremely proud of their performances,” said Lewes Athletic Club Race Walking Coach Peter Selby. “Competing at a national championship is a great achievement in itself, but to come away with silver and bronze medals is a fantastic result. They both showed great determination and composure throughout the race, and it was particularly pleasing to see them finish together at the top of the English Schools’ results. They are a credit to Lewes Athletic Club and to Sussex Schools’ athletics.”
