Lewes AC women’s team – they came - they ran - they conquered 14th Feb 2017
The Lewes AC women’s team won the Sussex Athletics cross country league. Held over four tough and testing courses at Goodwood, Lancing Manor, Stanmer Park and Hickstead Show Ground the team were convincing winners. Up against teams from across Sussex the Lewes team won the league’s first division by a large margin from Arena 80 in second place and Brighton Phoenix in third. Highlighting the strength in depth of the women’s running group at the Lewes club the women’s B team claimed the team bronze medal for division two.

Led by Izzy Coomber who took the individual league gold medal the Lewes team had 4 runners in the first 10 runners in the last race held at the Hickstead Show Ground. Over the four matches the league’s individual silver medal went to Gina Wilson and the bronze medal to Maria Barrow. This represented a clean sweep of the senior women medals. Also in medal winning form was Helen Sida who scoped the bronze medal in the women over 45 age category and Karin Divall who also won an individual bronze medal in the women aged over 55.

In the final race the seven Lewes AC women competing and their places were Izzy Coomber (2nd); Megan Taylor (4th); Gina Wilson (6th); Emma Rollings (9th); Helen Sida (32nd); Dinah Godfree (40th); Sally Norris (44th); and Karin Divall (53rd):

For all this season the Lewes AC men’s team have been trying to hang onto the women’s coat tails but have had to admit to being second best. They did however come away with some team and individual medals. The senior men’s team just missed winning a medal by finishing in 4th place but the veteran team for men over 40 finished third in their category. Two individual medals were won with the best being the silver medal won by Jonathon Burrell in the men over 50 category and Harry Strong who finished third in the men’s under 20 age group.

In the final race of the League at Hickstead Josh Burgess had another storming run to finish 4th in the men’s race. Josh was followed by Matt Bradford in 21st place with Lewis Sida just one place and 4 seconds behind in 22nd place. The other finishers in the men’s race with their positions were Mark Cage (42nd); Jonathon Burrell (46th and 2nd man over 50); Lee Woodgate (48th); Harry Strong (52nd and 3rd man under 20); Mike Green (61st) and Colin Bennett (74th)
